Bible Verses About Hope
Ten verses on hope, gathered under one theme — with a note on why each one belongs.
Hope in Scripture is not optimism. Optimism is a forecast: it expects the situation to improve. Biblical hope is closer to a posture — it expects God to be faithful whether or not the situation improves. That distinction is why these verses so often show up in the hardest seasons rather than the easiest ones.
The passages below are the ones people return to when waiting has gone on longer than they planned. Read together, they trace a shape: hope is anchored in God's character (Lamentations 3), sustained through waiting (Isaiah 40), produced by endurance rather than bypassing it (Romans 5), and finally rooted in something already accomplished rather than merely wished for (1 Peter 1).
That last point is what separates this from encouragement. Christian hope looks backward at the resurrection before it looks forward at anything else.
1. Romans 15:13
Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
Note · Hope here is something God fills you with, not something you manufacture.
2. Lamentations 3:22-23
It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Note · Written in the middle of a book of grief — the hope is anchored in God, not in circumstances improving.
3. Isaiah 40:31
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Note · Waiting is the condition, not the obstacle.
4. Romans 5:3-5
...tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed...
Note · Hope is produced through hardship rather than around it.
5. Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
Note · Spoken to a people already in exile — a promise for the middle, not the end.
6. Psalm 42:11
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him...
Note · The psalmist argues with himself. Hope is a thing you can preach to yourself.
7. Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Note · The closest Scripture comes to a definition.
8. 1 Peter 1:3
...begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Note · A "lively" — living — hope, grounded in something that already happened.
9. Micah 7:7
Therefore I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.
Note · A decision stated in the future tense: I will look, I will wait.
10. Psalm 71:14
But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.
Note · Hope as a practice that accumulates over a lifetime.
