Bible Verses About Anxiety and Fear
Ten verses for anxious seasons — with a note on why each one belongs.
Scripture treats anxiety with more tenderness than most people expect. The command "be not afraid" appears constantly, but it is almost never issued alone — it comes attached to a reason, and the reason is nearly always presence rather than outcome. God does not usually promise that the feared thing will not happen. He promises to be there.
That pattern is worth noticing as you read the verses below. Isaiah 41:10 says "fear thou not" and then immediately explains why: "for I am with thee." Joshua 1:9 does the same. Philippians 4 does not promise the circumstance will resolve; it promises a peace that "passeth all understanding," which is to say a peace that does not make sense given the circumstances.
A note on what these verses are not. They are not a substitute for medical care. Anxiety can be a spiritual matter, a physical one, or both at once, and Scripture nowhere asks you to choose. Casting your care on God and calling a doctor are not competing acts.
1. Philippians 4:6-7
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Note · The peace promised is explicitly one that does not add up.
2. 1 Peter 5:7
Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
Note · The shortest verse here, and the one most often written in margins.
3. Isaiah 41:10
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee...
Note · Every command has a reason attached, and the reason is presence.
4. Matthew 6:34
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
Note · Anxiety is largely a tax paid on a day that has not arrived.
5. John 14:27
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Note · A different kind of peace than the world offers, named as such.
6. Psalm 94:19
In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.
Note · For racing thoughts specifically — the verse names the experience precisely.
7. Psalm 55:22
Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
Note · Sustain, not remove. The weight is carried, not deleted.
8. 2 Timothy 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Note · "A sound mind" — clarity is treated as a gift, not an achievement.
9. Psalm 34:4
I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
Note · Testimony rather than instruction: this is someone reporting back.
10. Joshua 1:9
...Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
Note · Given to someone facing a genuinely frightening assignment.
